  • A tele guy on the FWT podium?

    April 11, 2012

Yep, you heard right. At the recent Freeskiing World Tour finale at Kirkwood, California, you may have noticed a certain Jake Sakson throwing down one of the best lines of the day ... and on telemark gear. Jake is a longtime Flylow athlete and he's stood on top of many telemark freeskiing podiums before, but this was his first top three finish with the big boys of the alpine comps. Jake also won the coveted Backcountry.com Sickbird Award for the most impressive line of the day. Said Jake afterward, "It feels so good to represent freeheel style. It took me four years to make it past the first day in an alpine competition. It's pretty incredible to find myself on the podium!"

Other Flylow athletes did us proud at the comp too, including Silas Chickering-Ayers, who took fifth in the men's field, and Rebecca Selig, who Powder Magazine recently called a "dark horse."

  • Selig's Season

    September 26, 2011

Flylow athlete Rebecca Selig just dropped this edit featuring new interview material and ski footage from last season. Selig is no stranger to the podium at Subaru Freeskiing World Tour stops and she'll be competing on the full tour again this season. She recently had stories written up about her in the Vail Daily and ESPN.com. Keep on on eye on this one -- you'll likely see her atop some more podiums this winter.

  • Rebecca Selig gets third at Red Bull Powder Disorder

    August 10, 2011

Flylow athlete Rebecca Selig just placed third in the first stop of the Freeskiing World Tour at Las Leñas, Argentina. The invite-only Red Bull Powder Disorder was the first-ever FWT to include manmade jumps. We're pretty darn proud of Selig, who stood on the podium with winner Crystal Wright and two-time FWT champ Angel Collinson, who took second. We spoke to Selig before the contest about how she got to be where she is now.

    Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Kalamazoo Michigan, which is a big college town. I started out skiing at Timber Ridge ski area, which only has about 150 verticle.  I was up there everyday, by myself because I was only person in my school that skied. I skipped a lot of school, but was somehow able to pull off straight As.

How old were you when you first started skiing?
It was always my dad’s dream, who is a retired vet, to get us into skiing. He started us out when I was about 2 ½ years old. We would go up every Sunday and every Christmas we got a new pair of skis. Our family vacations were to big ski areas on the west coast. I had a full ride scholarship for softball, but gave is up because all I wanted to do was continue skiing.

Did you always want to be a pro?
Becoming a pro was always a dream of mine, but I didn’t want to admit it because I was scared to fail. I ski raced as a kid, but wasn’t really into it because I loved the big mountain and doing my own thing. I feel so lucky to be interviewed my magazines and other professionals. It’s such a blessing.

Was there anyone in particular who helped motivate you to where you are?
My dad shared the love and passion for skiing. My ski coaches helped motivate me to get to where I am today. I’m mainly skiing because it’s what I love to do and there isn’t anything like it.

What does skiing mean to you?
To me, skiing is my church, lifestyle, everything in my life really. It gives me motivation to keep going in the summer and is what drives me to be a better person. I’m actively involved in AA and skiing helps me keep a straight line. It keeps me closer to God and keeps me out of trouble.

How do you stay in shape during the off-season?
I live with a rafting guide, so that helps me get into the outdoors. I also go rock climbing and kayaking everyday. I try to do at least 20-30 minutes of cardio everyday. I don’t have a structured workout really; I do pushups and sit-ups in my room. I have a free class that I’m able to go to every day, but I haven’t started doing that. I will have to eventually because I’ve got to start training for Argentina.I’ve have 5 major ACL surgery’s, three years in a row. So, I need to make sure that I stay on top of my strength building so I don’t have to go through that again.
